Chapter Eleven

“Well, that flattens one of my theories,” Niall said as they left Lizzie’s rooming house. “She had knowledge and access to the poisonous plants. I had entertained the notion that Lizzie might have done Janet in, for the chance to take over her enterprise. But that’s clearly not the case.”

“No, I knew she hadn’t done it since I first spoke with her,” Kara said absently. “She was quite fiercely angry about it and furiously sure no one would care enough to look for the killer.”

Her head felt heavy, her mind abuzz. The girl had given her so much to think about, to reconcile. So many things that must be done and followed up on. It all grew to a roar inside her head as they finally reached a main thoroughfare and found a hack. She climbed in, resting her head against the side. Closing her eyes, she tried to sort through the noise and lower the clamor.

The next thing she knew, Turner was coaxing her out of the hack and onto the drive at Bluefield. She looked about, befuddled. The roaring returned as she stepped onto the gravel. It made her eyelids feel heavy and gritty, her limbs sluggish. So much to do. And yet she felt so tired.

Turner put an arm around her and began to lead her off, the same way he’d done when she was young and had read too late in the library or lingered too long at work in her laboratory. She let her head fall against him—but then she straightened. “Wait. Niall.”

She turned to see her friend heading across the grounds, aiming for his forge and the loft above. He looked back, and she pointed a finger at him. “Breakfast. Early. We have much to discuss. And to plot.”

He nodded and went on. She let Turner guide her to her bedroom. She had no memory of her maid undressing her, but she woke in her night rail, with the sun higher than usual and that sense of heaviness still with her.

She hurried through her morning preparations. “Has Mr. Kier arrived for breakfast yet?” she asked her maid.

“Not that I’m aware of.” Elsie met her gaze in the mirror and grinned. “I’m sure we would have heard the sighs from here.”

Kara laughed. “No doubt. Well, he’ll arrive shortly, I’m sure. I think I’ll wait in the ivory sitting room. Have them send word for me there.”

She strode through the house and felt a little better when she reached the comfort of her retreat. Searching out a notepad and pen, she leaned over the desk to start making lists.

It didn’t help. She still felt restless and uneasy, her mind full.

She had to go, to move. She strode out and passed a footman in the corridor. “Please tell them I’ll be in my lab,” she said as she flew by.

The staff was used to her odd behavior. He only inclined his head. “Very good, miss.”

She rushed outside and through the grounds. After unlocking her laboratory, she went straight to the back, to the partially complete sculpture.
